Odyssey School was born in 1997, when three special education professionals recognized the need in Austin for a private school that would enable students with learning differences to experience academic success. Odyssey opened its doors in 1998 with nineteen students, two teachers, and a head of school. That first location, in the basement of the Marywood Child and Family Services building, was full of hope, excitement, and promise. The school quickly outgrew that first facility, and relocated to a converted dance studio in Central Austin. We stayed in that cramped Houston Street building for five years, until 2005, when the school moved to its current location on Red River Street. In its first years, Odyssey served elementary and middle school students with learning differences. In 2005, we earned our high school accreditation and in 2006 we became the first private high school in central Texas dedicated solely to students with learning differences. In 2009, Odyssey proudly conferred diplomas on its first class of graduating seniors. We look forward to continually refining our service to students of all ages with learning differences in the years to come.

I have experience as a certified high school English teacher with a masters degree, as a past journalist, and as a CALT and LDT working for schools with groups of children or, more often recently, as an one-on-one licensed, dyslexia therapist. I have certifications for working with pre-k through high school students. TEA certified me in all levels of teaching, and ALTA certified me in all of the multisensory programs designed to reach out to dyslexics, making the best possible progress. Multi-sensory programs which I have certifications and/or past training in are listed here: BLS, Take Flight, Pre-Take Flight. I also have advanced training through Lindamood-Bell in Visualizing & Verbalizing, Lips, Seeing Stars, and On Cloud Nine ( math). I have branched out with training and workshops in use of the Wilson System, in Neuhaus' Scientific Spelling, and in the Metacognitive approach to vocabulary and writing. As a past English teacher, and as a CALT, I have worked with hundreds of students in the areas of all forms and purposes of writing, such as expository, persuasive, process, narrative and creative. Recently, I worked two full years with a m.s. student with dyscalculia using manipulatives, a large white board, and the Saxon program.
