In this book, Jon Kabat-Zinn, one of the key figures in bringing mindfulness to the western world, and his wife Myla, tackle the task of parenting. No parent escapes the very trying realities of being a parent and the Kabat-Zinn’s acknowledge this truth. But whereas so many books and experts focus on the difficulties, Everyday Blessings focuses as well on the joys…the “everyday blessings” of parenting.
I recommend this book for any parent, not just those who have an interest in mindfulness. Those some of the ways the Kabat-Zinns encourage the reader to relate to their children are mindfulness exercises, the strategies are quite universal. Or instance, the book asks the reader to try to imagine the world through the child’s eyes as well as the importance of apologies.
As a parent, I find true wisdom in Everyday Blessings. I appreciate the honesty and the willingness to look at times when they have made mistakes (very comforting for this imperfect parent.)
