Have you or your child been struggling with reading? Is reading a painstaking challenge that is often avoided? If so, the Licensed Psychologists at the ApaCenter can help you or your child succeed at work or school.
Dyslexia, also known as a specific reading disability or a reading disorder, affects approximately 10% of the population. It is characterized by difficulties with learning to read despite adequate learning opportunities and average or above intellectual functioning. Individuals with dyslexia often have deficits in their phonological processing (i.e., understanding how letters and sounds go together). In addition, it is common for people with dyslexia to have a slower reading fluency (i.e., speed at which they read) as well as difficulties with written expression.
Although many people with dyslexia struggle with reading throughout their lifetime, an accurate diagnosis and intervention can lead to significant improvements in a person’s reading ability.
At the ApaCenter, our Licensed Psychologists have extensive expertise in helping persons with dyslexia succeed. Our psychological assessments can determine whether you or your child has dyslexia. We can distinguish dyslexia from the many other conditions that can present similarly, such as ADD/ADHD, slow processing speed, and working memory deficits. A proper diagnosis is essential for effective intervention. Importantly, we also will identify you or your child’s strengths, resources, and resiliencies so that these can be capitalized upon.
Children and college students who have dyslexia are eligible for educational services and accommodations through special education or 504. Gaining access to such services and accommodations can be critical to overcoming educational challenges.
In our assessments, we provide specific recommendations based upon you or your child’s unique profile of strengths and weaknesses. Our assessments can also help you or your child:
- Significantly increase reading skills
- Improve grades
- Gain access to educational services and accommodations (e.g., extended time on tests) in grades K-12 as well as college
- Capitalize on strengths to enhance learning
