About Gwen Kinney
I started my first career as an educator in the 1980s and have over 15 years experience as an educator and school administrator with a master’s degree in education and 24 post- baccalaureate hours in special education. I have taught grades pre-k thru 8, and am certified as both a reading specialist and Gifted and Talented specialist in Texas. I also have experience working as a learning specialist with students who have been diagnosed with learning and developmental disabilities. I have served as an assistant head of school, a dean of faculty, and as a Pre-K thru 12th grade school counselor working with students with emotional and behavioral challenges. In my quest to connect with children and adults in a deeper way beyond the school setting, I received a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. I have worked in three non-profit agencies with individuals and couples who have faced relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, addiction, trauma, infertility, changes in family dynamics, grief and loss.
I have life coaching experience working with teens and adults in new phases of life. I have worked with clients wanting guidance with school choices, career decisions, and those wanting to define and establish a clear vision and purpose for their life. My coaching experience also involves supporting parents. In parent coaching sessions, I like to help parents improve communication, develop problem-solving skills, and nurture the heart of the family.
As an adoptive parent, I am passionate about issues around adoption and have worked with families in the beginning processes of the adoption experience through partnering with families in addressing the unique experiences of families formed by adoption.
I believe that we were designed for attachment and connection and that the therapeutic relationship is one where a connection between the therapist and the client can be a powerfully healing experience. I believe it’s important for the client to experience a relationship with the therapist that is warm, welcoming and without judgment.
I help clients focus on their strengths and identify mutually agreed upon goals towards meeting life’s challenges. I allow space for the client to take the session where he or she wants it to go and at the pace he or she feels comfortable with. I understand my style to be one who guides without pushing.
I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches and theoretical orientations when more concrete steps for change are needed. I have experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Self Compassion strategies, DBT skills, attachment focused parenting and couples therapy, trauma informed therapy, and child centered play therapy.
